When to use it

Use ～向けだ when specifying the intended audience, market, or destination of a product, document, service, or event — i.e. something was made for that group. It is the standard label in business writing for segmenting deliverables (法人向け, 社内向け, 海外向け). Distinguish from ～向きだ, which says something happens to suit someone rather than being deliberately designed for them.

Formation

  • Noun + 向けだ — attaches directly to a noun naming the target: 学生向けだ, 法人向けだ
  • Noun + 向けの + Noun — attributive use: 海外向けの仕様, 管理職向けの研修
  • Noun + 向けに + Verb — adverbial use: 初心者向けに書き直す
  • Also compounds as a noun itself: 富裕層向け市場, 国内向け出荷
  • Does not attach to verbs, i-adjectives, or na-adjectives. Express purpose there with ～ための／～ように instead (× 読む向けの → ○ 読むための)
  • Polite/plain forms behave like a noun: 向けです／向けである／向けではない

Examples

  • This proposal is aimed at the executive level, so I kept the figures to a minimum.

  • The new feature is geared toward corporate clients; we won't open it to individual users.

  • Next week's briefing is for clients. We'll hold a separate one for internal staff.

  • For the overseas-facing materials, could you also prepare an English version?

  • It was pointed out that this price range isn't aimed at beginners.
