When to use it

Use ～に至るまで in formal writing or speech to stress the full extent of a range — that coverage reaches even the far, trivial, or unexpected end point. It typically pairs with a starting point (～から～に至るまで) or highlights an extreme detail, and carries a nuance of "even down to." In reports, contracts, and audits it signals thoroughness; in narration (～に至るまでの経緯) it means "the process leading up to."

Formation

  • Noun + に至るまで — the standard use: 細部に至るまで、末端の社員に至るまで
  • Often bracketed: Noun₁から Noun₂に至るまで — 企画から納品に至るまで
  • Verb (dictionary form) + に至るまで — limited; mostly modifying a noun: 合意に達するに至るまでの経緯
  • i-adjectives / na-adjectives: do not attach
  • Note the contrast with ～に至る ("reach the point of"), which takes a result, not a range
