Grammar

N2

~に応じて

~ni ōjite

in accordance with

When to use it

Use ~に応じて when something varies in proportion to or is adapted to match a variable factor — budget, volume, headcount, circumstances. It is the standard register for proposals, contracts, and policy statements where you promise flexible handling; in speech and casual writing 〜によって or 〜次第で often replaces it. Note that the preceding noun must be something that can vary or differ in degree, unlike 〜に応えて (responding to a request/expectation).

Formation

  • Noun + に応じて — 予算に応じて、状況に応じて。This is the core (and by far the most common) form.
  • Noun + に応じ — the 連用中止 form; stiffer, used in written notices, contracts and formal speeches.
  • Noun + に応じた + Noun — attributive form: ご要望に応じたプラン (a plan tailored to your request).
  • Verbs / adjectives: cannot attach directly. Nominalize first — 使うかどうかに応じて、どれだけ売れたかに応じて、必要になるのに応じて.
  • Takes concrete or measurable nouns (量・人数・成績・状況・条件). Not used with one-off events (×事故に応じて).
