Grammar

N2

~に伴って

~ni tomonatte / ni tomonai / ni tomonau

along with, as

When to use it

Use ~に伴って when one change occurs in parallel with another — the second event follows naturally from the first as it progresses. It is common in reports, notices, and presentations describing structural change (market shifts, reorganizations, regulatory revisions), and is stiffer than ~につれて while less mathematical than ~とともに. In written notices and email, the ~に伴い form is standard; ~に伴う modifies a following noun.

Formation

  • Noun + に伴って/に伴い/に伴う+Noun:組織改編に伴って/改編に伴う混乱
  • Verb (dictionary form) + のに伴って:高齢化が進むのに伴って
  • i-adjective / na-adjective: not used directly; nominalize first (例:暖かくなるのに伴って、円安が進むのに伴って)
  • Takes non-volitional, gradual or large-scale changes as its subject; avoid with one-off personal actions or commands in the main clause

Examples

  • Along with the weak yen, raw material costs have been rising.

  • In line with our business expansion, we will move to a new structure next month.

  • We'll discuss our response to the system revision at the next meeting.

  • As the population declined, the domestic market shrank as well.

  • With the office relocation, our phone number will also change.
