When to use it

Use ～と見られる in written reports, news articles, and analytical business documents to present an inference or prevailing assessment without naming who holds it. It lets you state a conclusion objectively — softer than 〜だ, more evidential than 〜だろう. In meeting minutes, market commentary, and press releases it is the standard way to say "is believed/expected to." The progressive 〜と見られている stresses that this is the current consensus view.

Formation

  • Verb: plain form + と見られる（値上がりすると見られる／落ち込んだと見られる）
  • い-adjective: plain form + と見られる（影響は大きいと見られる）
  • な-adjective: stem + （だ）と見られる／である と見られる（回復は困難と見られる）
  • Noun: noun + （だ）と見られる／である と見られる（主因は円安と見られる）
  • だ is usually dropped in written register; である is used in stiffer documents
  • Frequently 〜と見られている (established view) and 〜と見られていた (past estimate); polite 〜と見られます in reports and presentations
