When to use it

Use ~とあって in written or formal spoken reporting to present a special circumstance and then the natural, almost inevitable consequence that follows from it. It is common in news writing, internal reports, and meeting summaries where you are describing a situation objectively rather than expressing your own will. The second clause must be an observed result — never a request, command, or statement of the speaker's own intention.

Formation

  • Verb: plain (dictionary) form + とあって — 出席するとあって
  • i-adjective: plain form + とあって — 反響が大きいとあって
  • na-adjective: stem + とあって (だ is dropped; ~であるとあって in stiffer prose) — 異例とあって
  • Noun: noun + とあって (no だ) — 繁忙期とあって
  • Past forms are possible (受注したとあって) but the plain non-past or a bare noun is by far the most common in reports.
  • The result clause is descriptive: 〜ている・〜た・〜ようだ. Avoid 〜てください/〜たい/〜つもりだ.
