～たびに

every time

When to use it

Use ～たびに to say that something happens on every occasion of some event, especially when each occurrence brings a change or a recurring consequence. It is common in reports, email and meeting talk where you describe a repeated pattern (every time we meet, every business trip, every time the person in charge changes). Unlike ～ごとに, it does not attach to counters or fixed intervals — 三年ごとに is fine, 三年たびに is not.

Formation

Verb (dictionary / non-past plain form) + たびに → 会うたびに、変わるたびに (never past tense: ×会ったたびに)
Noun + の + たびに → 出張のたびに、会議のたびに、決算のたびに
i-adjectives / na-adjectives: not used; rephrase with a noun or verb (×忙しいたびに → 忙しくなるたびに)
Written/spoken 度に is the same word; formal documents often use the kanji 度
The main clause usually states a habitual result, so it takes non-past (～する／～ことになる) rather than a one-off past event

Examples

Every time the person in charge changes, we end up explaining everything from scratch.
Every time we meet the other party, they ask for a price cut.
On every business trip, I pay a courtesy visit to the local agency.
If the figures change with every report, we lose credibility.
Each specification change necessitates a review of the delivery date.
