When to use it

Use ～かたわら in written or formal register to say that someone pursues a secondary activity alongside their main occupation or duty. The main activity comes first, the side activity second, and both must be sustained over time — not one-off actions. It is common in profiles, press releases, and reports; in speech ～ながら or ～と同時に is more natural.

Formation

Verbs: dictionary form + かたわら (経営する → 経営するかたわら). No past or ～ている forms.
Nouns: noun + の + かたわら (研究のかたわら). Typically nouns denoting an occupation or activity.
i-adjectives / na-adjectives: do not attach — the pattern requires an activity, not a state.
Subject is normally the same for both clauses, and the main clause states the primary occupation. Note the separate literal sense of かたわら(に) = "beside, at one's side."

Alongside running the company, the president also devotes energy to developing junior talent.
While running his company, he also contributes to trade journals.
On top of handling sales, he has also been entrusted with new-hire training.
Alongside our core business, we have been advancing research into overseas markets.
While carrying out his regular duties, the director also led the internal reforms.
